Loualhati said she didn't know exactly how low the supply was, but said the review has prompted Public Health to begin developing guidelines on how to release their stockpile.
Doctors have been prescribing Tamiflu to many patients exhibiting severe flu symptoms or to those with underlying medical conditions who pose a higher risk for developing complications from the H1N1 virus.
Pharmacies and clinics last week said a recent spike in flu cases and a corresponding increase in Tamiflu prescriptions left many pharmacies in short supply.
The Pacific Daily News last week called 14 pharmacies, and eight said they no longer had Tamiflu medication. The PDN called those same pharmacies yesterday and seven said they were out.
Loualhati said some physicians in a recent meeting relayed a "sense of urgency" for Public Health to make its anti-viral medication supply available to local pharmacies.
Public Health has said it has an "adequate supply" of Tamiflu but won't say exactly how much, citing security reasons.
The health department is also preparing to release guidelines and recommendations to clinics that prioritizes who should be treated with Tamiflu, Loualhati said, adding those guidelines might be released.
The recommendations are based on guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and from a committee comprising Public Health physicians, representatives from the Guam Medical Association and Guam Medical Society, and other local physicians.
Public Health officials have acknowledged that more cases of the pandemic virus, commonly known as swine flu, are spreading locally rather than through people traveling to Guam. The island has 33 confirmed cases and one death.
Additional protocols
Dr. Thomas Shieh, a local obstetrician-gynecologist, is among those doctors who have put in place additional protocols in their clinic to help prevent the spread of the H1N1 flu virus.
He said "high risk" patients should be treated with Tamiflu even if their swine flu test results aren't confirmed yet. Those who are considered more likely to develop complication from swine flu include people with lung or heart conditions, pregnant women, the elderly and children under age 5, people with diabetes and immune deficiency conditions and people who are obese.
"The key is not treating everyone (with Tamiflu), but those who are high risk only, at least for now," Shieh said.
While people shouldn't panic, Shieh said the community needs to take the local outbreak seriously.
"It appears to be spreading quickly, and although it may be like a seasonal flu, it can get bad," he said. "I'd rather be criticized for being better or overly prepared than under prepared."
Dr. Bevan Geslani of the Seventh-day Adventist Clinic agreed with Shieh.
For patients who are generally healthy and don't have underlying medical conditions, he said, they don't usually need to be prescribed Tamiflu and should be able to recover by resting at home.
"This is a community issue and rather than each of the clinics doing their own thing, we need to coordinate with what Public Health is recommending," he said.
**Link to official PDN article**
